12 Delicious Recipes to Celebrate National Dairy Month
Recognizing National Dairy Month is a tradition that dates back to 1937 when grocery organizations sponsored “National Milk Month” as a way to promote drinking milk during the summer months, and it was in 1939 that June became the official dairy month. Still celebrated today, Dairy Month honors the hard-working dairy farm families who produce nutritious milk and dairy foods.
Did You Know?
- Farmers measure milk in pounds, not gallons - 8.6 pounds per gallon is the standard
- It takes about 10 pounds of milk to make one pound of cheese
- Dairy cows eat about 100 pounds of food every day and drink 25-50 gallons of water
- Home delivery of milk started in 1942 as a war conservation measure
Dairy foods, especially lower fat varieties, bring a lot of taste and nutrition to our tables. Low fat milk is a great way to increase the nutrition quality of your family’s diet. An 8-ounce glass of milk is packed with 9 essential nutrients: calcium, potassium, phosphorus, protein, vitamins D, A, B12, riboflavin and niacin.
Low fat or fat free milk products are recognized for several important health benefits including bone health, especially in children and adolescents, and helping to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes as well as being associated with lower blood pressure in adults.
Add more dairy into your family’s diet at mealtime, snacktime or anytime. Need some new recipe ideas? We’ve got you covered beginning with a breakfast shake to frozen yogurt pops, and everything in between!
