Freezing temperatures, gusty winds, and gray skies can make for a long winter when you live in the Northeast. Finding fun and innovative things to do in January and February (like a delicious Hot Chocolate Bar) is a great way to boost your mood. How about treating the kids to a mini DIY hot chocolate bar after sledding? They’ll love it and by keeping it small and simple, you’ll love that it’s easy for you, too! Create a more elaborate set-up for a larger celebration of family and friends. Let’s face it … there is still a child in each of us who would love a cup of hot cocoa with all the yummy fixings! For a true adult beverage, a favorite spirit can be added for that little extra kick!
Making Hot Chocolate
You’ll need to decide if you want to make the hot chocolate from scratch or provide packets or K-cups for guests to make their own, which means having hot milk or hot water available for them. Packets and pods can often be convenient, but homemade hot chocolate is easy and well worth the time for its smooth, creamy richness! It can be made on the stove top, just be sure not to let it boil. It can then be kept hot in a good carafe or if left on the stove, keep below a simmer and stir often. A slow cooker can also be used for the hot chocolate. Cooking on low heat for 6 hours is recommended, although it can be cooked on high for 4 hours. Once it’s ready, serve within an hour (if possible) to avoid the milk from curdling or the hot chocolate from sticking.
Here are 3 different twists on hot chocolate that all show just how easy and delicious homemade hot chocolate is!
Setting Up a Hot Chocolate Bar
Set up a table or an area on your island/counter with everything for the Hot Chocolate Bar including a nice sign. Simply use a small chalkboard or find free printable signs online, like these great ones from Jessica at Pen + Paper Flowers!
There’s nothing like a nice mug when sipping a hot beverage, so if you have enough, then definitely use them! Depending upon the number of guests and the occasion, you may even want to think about customizing the mugs for an extra-special touch or as a party favor. If mugs aren’t an option, check online for paper coffee cups that are colorful and fun.
Choose what mix-ins and toppers you’ll have, and place in jars, bowls or ramekins, including small spoons or mini scoops in each. Use small labels, tags, or even an erasable marker to identify them. Consider using differing heights and sizes to create a more aesthetically pleasing look.
