Fall is almost upon us as evidenced by chilly nights and leaves gradually beginning to change color, and with it comes the activities we all look forward to during this season. A popular favorite is visiting the local orchard to pick a bag of apples and while there, who can resist an apple cider donut, a cup of pressed cider or the smell of freshly baked apple pie - yum! Many orchards also offer other fun for the entire family throughout the fall like wagon hay rides, corn or hay mazes, pumpkin picking, etc. while others have cidery and/or brewery for adult enjoyment.

Have you ever heard the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away?” Although it can’t keep the doctor away, it does offer some health benefits. One medium apple is naturally fat-free, sodium-free, and cholesterol-free, and contains less than 100 calories making it a smart snack. Apples provide over 20% of your daily fiber needs, and eating a diet with plenty of fiber can help keep your digestive system regular, lower blood cholesterol, and control blood sugar levels.
Bruised apples will rot faster, and since one bad apple really can spoil the whole bunch, be sure to sort and remove any. Apples that will be eaten within a few days can be kept in a bowl on the counter, but otherwise they should be kept in the refrigerator to extend their shelf life. Keep them away from other fruits though since they emit ethylene, which will speed up the ripening.
With the number of varieties and textures available, there isn’t a one size fits all when it comes to apples and what they are best suited for i.e. all-purpose, eating, cooking or baking. Apples can be enjoyed at every meal and in countless ways! Be sure to choose the right apple to ensure recipe success.
