The apple is the official fruit of New York State with more than 40 different varieties and 600 producers. As the 2nd largest apple producer in the United States, New York produces more varieties than any other state including Washington, the largest producer, which accounts for more than half the apple production. While apples are grown in almost every country, China is actually the leading producer worldwide. During the
2023/2024 crop season, China’s production was almost 45 million metric tons followed by the European Union with about 12.21 million metric tons, and then the United States at 5.03 million metric tons. That’s a lot of apples!
