Be sure to get out and explore your local farmers markets! Not only do they provide opportunities to small farmers and businesses to sell their products, they also help to meet the growing demand for locally grown produce, food and other products.
Fresh locally grown seasonal produce is a farmers market favorite, and people flock there to peruse the colorful displays. There they can find greens, broccoli, cauliflower, root veggies, cucumbers, tomatoes, melons, berries, peaches, nectarines and more! Produce is just the beginning, though, since there is so much more to scope out at farmers markets. Other locally grown, produced or crafted items that may also be found include:
You can even make a farmers market visit into a family outing if it’s one that features music, activities for children and concessionaires’ stands.
Get the most out of shopping at farmers markets by following these tips:
Go shopping early to get the best selection and to avoid the possibility of the more popular items selling out. If you’re looking for the best deals, then go later on! Some vendors may discount products during the last hour to avoid schlepping them back, but only if the market permits.
Buy in bulk, if possible, for the best price. Consider canning or freezing to savor the seasonal flavors later in the year.
Talk to the farmers and vendors and ask questions, as rules and regulations vary considerably among markets. Just because it’s at a farmers market, doesn’t mean it’s organically grown or even sold by the person who did the growing.
Have cash and some small bills ($1s and $5s) on you to make purchasing easier. Smaller vendors typically do not offer credit and debit card processing due to the expense and while bigger farmers' markets usually have a credit card machine, they are costly to use and may be difficult to locate.
Bring a cooler for any fresh foods that need to be kept cold until you’re able to refrigerate them.
Remember sturdy reusable bags or baskets for both shopping and transporting all your goodies home.
